Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor, used to inhibit the production of acids in the stomach. It is most widely recognized by the brand-name Nexium.

The majority of patients buy esomeprazole for its original use; to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also referred to as acid reflux, and the associated damage to the esophagus.

It is also commonly used to manage indigestion or heartburn. Note, however, that it takes several days or weeks of treatment to produce a significant difference; do not buy esomeprazole for fast-acting heartburn relief. The medication also see use in treating or preventing certain types of ulcers, and in managing Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Esomeprazole comes in granules or capsules. Granules must be dissolved in water prior to administration. Capsules may be opened and the contents mixed in a beverage or soft foods which do not require chewing. All preparations should be consumed immediately.

Managing GERD, Indigestion & Heartburn

While GERD very often produces indigestion and heartburn, esomeprazole may also be used when indigestion or heartburn are from other causes, such as gastritis. It is not effective in all cases, however; proton pump inhibitors only produce good results in about 50 percent of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. Untreated, GERD can lead to injury of the esophagus and additional complications.

Treatment for GERD, indigestion and heartburn is similar:

• Take 20 to 40 mg once per day for 4 weeks.
• If symptoms are measurably improved but not fully resolve, treatment may be extended for an additional 4 weeks.
• If symptoms are not significantly improved after the first 4 weeks, alternative options should be explored.

Some patients notice a reduction in symptoms in just a day two; for others it takes a couple weeks before noticeable effects occur.

Healing the Esophagus

Damage to the esophagus is most commonly caused by GERD, but the medication may aid healing when damage is from other causes. Treatment is fairly straightforward:

• Take 20 to 40 mg once per day for 4 to 8 weeks.
• A maintenance dose of 20 mg per day may continue for an additional 6 months.

As with GERD, patients may notice improvements in a matter of days, or it may take a week or two for significant results. When esomeprazole is taken for 6 months or longer, regular doctor exams are strongly encouraged to monitor for possible side effects of low magnesium or atrophic gastritis.

Preventing or Treating Ulcers

Treatment can be highly variable with ulcers, and often includes additional medications. The two most commonly-treated ulcer-related conditions are:

• Gastric ulcers, usually from NSAID use - 20 to 40 mg once daily for 6 months.
• Preventing recurring ulcers by eradicating H. pylori - 40 mg once daily for 10 days; other medications will also be given.

Note that this medication is only effective at treating or preventing certain types of ulcers; do not buy esomeprazole to treat an undiagnosed ulcer. Regular checkups are advised when this product is used for more than 6 months.

Managing Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Esomeprazole can help manage some of the unpleasant symptoms of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, though it is not a cure:

• Take 40 mg twice daily; dosage may be considerably higher for some patients.
• Treatment is typically long-term and may span years.

It may take several weeks before symptoms are noticeably reduced. Any time esomeprazole is taken for more than 6 months, regular doctor checkups are strongly encouraged to monitor for developing side effects.
